The Art of Light

Lighting has long been treated as a functional afterthought, something to fill a room rather than define it. But contemporary design tells a different story.

Today’s lamps are no longer confined to utility; they exist as sculptural objects, emotional cues, and quiet protagonists of interior spaces. From handcrafted ceramics to mouth-blown glass and metal armatures, modern lamps sit at the intersection of art, craft, and design. They carry narrative, texture, and intention. In spaces where design leads, light becomes a statement.

Here’s some pieces to consider if you want to add some creative flair to your living spaces.

Bottega Veneta for Flos

Bottega Veneta partnered with Flos on a special edition of Gino Sarfatti’s iconic Model 600 table lamp.

“Pushing beyond the rigidity of a conventional lamp base, Sarfatti designed a base of lead shot pellets, encased in smooth leather. This innovation allowed the lamp to sit on the table with a new kind of ease, while also enabling to adapt the light angle.” (Flos)

Lindsey Adelman

Loewe

During last year’s Milan Design Week, Loewe unveiled lamp created by 24 international artists. Here are some of our favourites.

Enrico David’s lamp is made from resin and onyx to resemble a curved human profile. The design reflects his consistent exploration of the human form.

Loewe also featured the work of Kazunori Hamana, who creates vessels out of natural clay. Handcrafted designs bring character to interior spaces. Shaped with meticulous attention to detail, each piece carries a story that quietly defines the atmosphere it inhabits.

Research shows that the intensity and colour of light shape of emotional experience, and is key to enhancing the experience of a space. At The Plum Edit, we believe that there is no place for ordinary lighting in spaces where design can effortlessly lead.
